How to Choose an Apparel Manufacturer
Before committing to a manufacturer, verify: their actual MOQ (not a marketing number), whether they require a sample before bulk production, their quality control standard (ask specifically, don't accept 'we check everything'), and how they handle communication and revisions.
Ask for the Real MOQ, Not the Marketing MOQ
Some factories advertise a low MOQ that only applies to blank/uncustomized goods — the real minimum jumps once you add printing, embroidery, or private labels. Confirm the MOQ that applies to your actual customized order, not a generic headline number.
Do They Require a Sample Before Bulk?
If a manufacturer pushes you straight to bulk production without a sample step, that's a red flag — it removes your only checkpoint to catch fit or fabric problems before they're baked into hundreds of units.
Ask About Their QC Standard Specifically
"We check quality" is not a standard. Ask what inspection standard they use (for example, AQL 2.5 — see our AQL 2.5 Explained guide) and at what stage(s) of production they inspect — fabric, in-line, and final are three different checkpoints, not one.
Who You Actually Communicate With
Are you talking directly to the factory, or through a trading company/agent layer that adds markup and communication delay? Ask directly — a factory that's transparent about this will tell you plainly.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Refuses to provide a sample before bulk - Vague or evasive answers about MOQ and lead time - No clear quality control standard when asked directly - Pressure to pay in full upfront with no milestone structure
